Cannes 2012: 65th Cannes Film Festival Awards Winners

Michael Haneke - Amour (Love)

Marilyn Monroe Cannes 65th (2012) posterEarly favourite Amour, from often controversial filmmaker Michael Haneke, has taken out the top prize at the 65th Cannes Film Festival Awards in a ceremony last night. Critics, commentators and audiences alike applauded this decision, with the film being one of the director’s most humanistic in his career.

The jury this year spread the love around to Ken Loach’s The Angels’ Share, finally gave recognition to Mads Mikkelsen for his role in The Hunt and gave. The nine-member jury consisted of Italian director Nanni Moretti, as well as actress Hiam Abbass, director Andrea Arnold, designer Jean-Paul Gaultier, actress Diane Kruger, actress Emmanuelle Devos,  actor Ewan McGregor, director Alexander Payne, and director Raoul Peck.

Beasts of the Southern Wild was also a big winner for the night, scooping three awards for Best First Feature (Caméra d’Or) from the Jury, as well as independent awards Youth Un Certain Regard, FIPRESCI Un Certain Regard and a special mention from the Ecumenical Jury.

One of the most talked-about films, Leos Carax’s Holy Motors, was awarded the Prix de la Jeunesse (Award of the Youth). With a small part by Kylie Minogue, it’s an Australian win, right?
