Trailer for Sofia Coppola’s ‘The Beguiled’ is epic Southern Gothic

The Beguiled

Universal Pictures Australia has released the first trailer for Sofia Coppola’s THE BEGUILED, a textbook example of Southern Gothic. While we don’t have a release date for Australia yet, hopefully it won’t be too far off the June 23 release date in the US. (Are you listening, Sydney Film Festival?)

Adapted by Coppola from Thomas Cullinan’s novel of the same name, unfolds in a girls’ school in the state of Virginia in 1864. As the Civil War rages, The Miss Martha Farnsworth Seminary for Young Ladies has been sheltered from the outside world – until the day a wounded Union soldier is discovered nearby and taken in.

A 1971 film adaptation starred Clint Eastwood as the injured man, but Coppola has made the film her own by shifting the perspective to the group of women in the house.

The film stars Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning, Emma Howard, Oona Laurence, Angourie Rice, and Addison Riecke, and is Coppola’s sixth theatrical feature as a director.
