The end of October also means Halloween, so it is no surprise that we have a number of horror posters in this month’s selection. Indeed, one of them is actually for Halloween, making this our de facto Halloween poster selection as well. The month was boosted by the presence of New York Comic-Con, which is always home to some great alternative posters. It’s also great to see some Australian designers including Ken Taylor, Jeremy Saunders and Tom Hodge (The Dude Designs) turn up this month again, for what we think is one of the strongest months to date.

Carrie - Designer: ARSONAL Design

The jury is still out on whether the Carrie remake is a good idea or not, but this first teaser poster is a terrific concept. Designer ARSONAL’s philosophy is stated to be “an idea does not live without proper execution and there is no execution without an idea”. The idea here is simplicity itself, taking the minimalist approach to an iconic horror character, dripping with a familiar bucket of blood. Without even needing to state the title of the film, the poster offers a simple proposition: if you don’t know Carrie’s name yet, you will soon enough.

Crawlspace – Artist: Hugh Fleming

The one-sheet for Australia’s Crawlspace, which saw its debut at Sitges 2012 this month, comes from Hugh Fleming. The influences from Drew Struszan are striking, although the same could be said of many handdrawn posters in this era of Photoshop. There’s lots to look at here, with images within the green highlights and a tunnel that seems to go on forever.

The Creature From the Black Lagoon – Artist: Laurent Durieux

Artist Laurent Durieux did posters of all the Universal Monsters, to coincide with the release of the Blu-ray box set and of course, Halloween. They were all very different in style, but we especially liked this ye olde map that makes up the creature. We are now seeing if any of the other islands make shapes. Is the one in the top left a bearded man smoking a pipe. Check out some details from this poster, and the other ones, on the Mondo blog.

Frankenweenie – Retro poster

In the tradition of the black and white ‘homage’ poster released back in July, Disney released no less than six new posters showcasing the retro aspects of Tim Burton’s new film Frankenweenie. While we were especially fond of The Curse of the Mummy Hamster poster, we can’t look past this tribute to Japanese monster films for our pick for the month. Filmed in “Terror”pin-A-Scope.

A Good Day to Die Hard – Teaser poster

Next year, Bruce Willis will dust off his cool, dry action hero wit to take down more bad guys with accents. This poster is a pure fan joy-buzzer, telling us where the series is going, but never forgetting where they came from. Yippee ki-yay.

Halloween – Designer: Ken Taylor

Australian artist Ken Taylor delivers a fresh take on classic horror just in time for the trick or treating celebration of the same name. Halloween became famous for bringing the threat of a psychotic madman into the quiet suburban street, and this monochromatic poster almost blends killer Michael Myers into the background, with only the blood-red autumn leaves giving the film a splash of colour. Yet there is an unspoken terror in his innocuousness, making this one of the finest posters of the many we’ve seen for the film over the years.

Iron Man 3 – Designers: BLT Communications, LLC

It may not be the most amazing poster in the world, especially given the competition this month, but the image of Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr) various Iron Man suits has become an integral part of the Iron Man 3 campaign. In fact, so recognisable are the suits that the poster doesn’t even need to mention the title beyond the number “3″.

Killing Them Softly – Designer: Gravillis Inc

As far as we can tell, there were 9 alternative posters to Andrew Dominik’s Killing Them Softly released in October. Some of these may never see bus stops or marquees, but we loved this one, recreating the US flag with bullets. The simple, bold design is deceptively simple, with little details like the worn background, and the clean fonts impressing on a second or third glance.

The Last Stand – Designers: Ignition Print

If we didn’t have enough reasons to be excited about The Last Stand – being South Korean director Kim Jee-Woon’s first English language film, and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s first starring role in almost a decade – this poster gives us about a dozen more. It’s a retro throwback to both the heyday of Arnie’s greatest action roles, and a few decades before that of action poster art. Major props go to this hand-drawn design that we hope is indicative of the controlled chaos that we will see in this film when it hits cinemas next year.

The Lone Ranger – Designer: BLT Communications, LLC

The title may say The Lone Ranger, but this poster and all of the film’s other publicity assure us that Johnny Depp as the faithful Tonto is the undeniable star. This poster aims to look as though it was painted onto wood, and left to face the elements for several decades until Disney was able to put their small stamp on it. Indeed, the Mouse’s logo is quite difficult to see down there in the corner, making the raven-shaped splash of black across Depp’s eyes the real star of this design.

Lost Highway – Designer: Jeremy Saunders

While Australian designer Jeremy Saunders may be taking a break from creating new posters for the time being, it hasn’t stopped him from designing a set of limited edition prints for the The Lynch Project. For each of these prints, Saunders has taken inspiration from an iconic object associated with the film, such as an ear on bright green grass (Blue Velvet) or a blood stained record (Wild At Heart). This print, titled “Fugue State”, is inspired by Lost Highway, using the video tape that slowly draws Fred Madison into the world of duality. Dick Laurent is dead.

The Man with the Iron Fists – Designer: Ignition Print

About a dozen cool designs premiered this month at various places on the Interwebs, but this one really grabbed our attention. The stunning design tells you everything you need to know about the film: there will be fighting of some kind and a guy with an iron fist. Plus butterflies. Lots of butterflies.

Pacific Rim – NYCC Exclusive

Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim might have everything we are looking for in a film, from giant robots fighting over the pacific to…well, what else do we need? The point is, this came from NYCC and we should rejoice at its existence. Go on. Rejoice. We’ll just be here waiting until you get back.

Silent Hill: Revelation – Designer: BIG JELLYFISH®

Why do we suddenly have an urge to see a Silent Hill film? This Italian poster for the latest franchise is EPIC!!! with  a capital ‘!’. However, should someone warn the woman in the top left that her hair is/in danger of catching on fire?

Stoker

Although it appears minimal and stark upon an initial glance, the poster is filled with tiny detail and the promise of a myriad of gothic horror. It is also the only poster this month that is accompanied by a promo music video, set to “Becomes the Color” by Emily Wells, acts as a metafictional ‘making of’ for the poster, showcasing the hand-drawn illustrations on the one-sheet as well as some of the stunning photography from the film.

Video Nasties – Artist: Tom Hodge (The Dude Designs)

This one isn’t actually a film poster, but rather a celebration of the good ol’ days of video nasties of all kinds. Artist Tom Hodge, who works under the name The Dude Designs, is one of our favourites here at The Reel Bits, with his love of all things cult cinema exceeding our own, turning the corner and slapping us on the backside as it laps us on the second pass. As Hodge notes on his blog: “Fancy something a little bit special to celebrate Halloween, Horror and the wonderful world of the Video Nasty… well now you can”.

The Wolverine Teaser poster

The simple and iconic design also recalls a Japanese ink wash painting, right down to the seal in the lower left corner. Lovely. With a poster like this, it has to be better than X-Men Origins: Wolverine, right? Right?

The sequel to 2009′s X-Men: Origins – Wolverine is set in Japan,and is said to be loosely based on Frank Miller (Sin City, The Spirit) and Chris Claremont’s 1982 comic book arc Wolverine, which sees the main man travel to Japan, where he falls for Mariko, the daughter of a Japanese crime lord. The film is directed by James Mangold with a script by Christopher McQuarrie.

The simple and iconic design also recalls a Japanese ink wash painting, right down to the seal in the lower left corner. Lovely.

Escaping from a witch as kids, Hansel (Jeremy Renner) and Gretel (Gemma Arterton) have a taste for witch killing. 15 years after their incident involving a gingerbread house, the siblings have evolved into bounty hunters who hunt witches for fun and profit. We can only hope that director Tommy Wirkola built a real hinger bread house for the children of the world to enjoy.

Iron Man 3 is released in Australia on Anzac Day, the 25 April 2013 from Disney. It will be released in the US on 3 May 2012.

Camion – Artist: Karine Savard

One of several posters for Canadian Rafaël Ouellet’s award-winning new film, that recently screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).  We love the minimalism of this, incorporating the title into the tire tracks. While undoubtedly not a direct influence on the design, we couldn’t help but me reminded of The Penguin Empire‘s poster for Blame.

The Collection

If the purpose of a film poster is to grab the attention of the viewer, then this first poster for The Collection does just that. It might not be for all tastes, but like the posters for The Human Centipede series before it, it celebrates the grotesque and exposes it to the harsh blue light of day.

Nothing screams film poster like a cartoon nipple cripple. Nothing.

Dredd 3D – Artist: Jock

Comic book artist Jock has been featured in this column before, with his Mondo poster for The Dark Knight Rises, and this month he re-teams with the Alamo Drafthouse to lay down the law on a special poster for the character on the latest adaptation for the 2000 AD character.

Dust Up – Artist: Akiko Stehrenberger

Painted posters are back this month! Stehrenberger has gained some attention over the last few years with posters for Father’s Day and the Funny Games remake. With this one-sheet, Stehrenberger takes a leaf out of her recent poster for Case di Mi Padre. The tri-fold is a nice touch to add that retro flavour.

Another poster for a film that will not get a huge release outside of its native territory, but the poster ensures that we’ll take a look at it. Federico Mauro has a very Saul Bass inspired design for this poster. By inspired, we mean that it has wholesale taken his design for Anatomy of a Murder. Nevertheless, a cool design remains a cool design.

Frankenweenie – Artist: Tim Burton

Remaking his own short film as a feature-length stop-motion animated film, an original Burton sketch graces this IMAX exclusive poster for the upcoming Frankenweenie. Only those attending those sessions can grab this poster, so keep an eye out on eBay for this gem of a poster.

Hitchcock – Artist: Bemis Balkind

To paraphrase Homer Simpson, this poster looks like the things they look like. The only thing more spooky than how much Anthony Hopkins looks like The Master of Suspense is how much this poster smacks of classic Hitch. While there is a flurry of activity around Hitchcock biopics at the moment, this poster takes the cake.

Inheritance – Artist: Aurélie Huet

Keeping it international here at the Bits, we’re digging on the rotoscoped vibe that this poster is giving off. The minimalist design is all about the blue, and it’s lovely to see what can be done with just a few layers of the bluest of blues. The fighter jets flying overhead sit in contrast with the family portrait in the front. Did we also mention blue?

Jurassic Park – Artist: Kevin Tong

How many Jurassic Park posters is this for Mondo now? It seems like a lot. At any rate, any excuse for a new Kevin Tong poster, all with requisite shapes and colours. He continues with a variation on his themes, and it is good to see that all of the nice dinosaurs have been included, and only one scary one up the back. All the dinosaurs up the front are all like “Dude, you’re going the wrong way!” and he’s all like “The colours, man! The colours!”

Looper – Artist: Martin Ansin

The film Looper plays with the concept of duality, and this is where Martin Ansin steps in with another fine print for the folks at Mondo. Using the characteristic lines we’ve seen in some of his other work, he splits the images with a two-tone colour scheme as well. The watch, we think, has something to do with time. That guy at the back looks just like Bruce Willis, right?

The Master

Before anybody saw a frame of footage, Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film was already being overly praised by real critics and Internet critics alike. This international poster goes the ink blot test. We think we see a pair of eyes and some ink, but we could be wrong. The backwards title is distracting. We’ve not seen The Master, but we’re happy to give it five stars now if it’s easier?

Monster Fest 2012 – Artist: Tom Hodge (The Dude Designs)

Hodge has had an incredibly busy month this September, with at least three column worthy posters. Yet this poster has a local flavour as well, hyping the Melbourne-based Monster Fest. From Hodge’s blog: “The concept was to create a classic film poster design based on the monster geisha character they have made for this promo short created by Isabel Peppard as the face of the fest for 2012…Its a straight down the line celebration of classic exploitation, monster, horror design to really drive home that film style vibe for the folks and as a fun poster momentum of the festival”.

Nosferatu – Artist: Christopher Cox

The Nosferatu poster was designed and illustrated by Changethethought artist and founder Christopher Cox. This is one of several screen prints done for the series, some adding a blood red border while others have an excessive amount of glow paint to give this an after dark glow.

Pain and Gain – Designers: BLT Communications, LLC

This one is kind of cute. Designing a film about weight lifting to look like that weight gain powder may either be genius, or the best thing about a film starring Marky Mark and The Rock.

Stand Up Guys – Designers: Works ADV

What is it? Saul Bass appreciation month? Or are silhouettes just big this season? Even more distinct for the folks at Works ADV, who have traditionally done very Photoshop-heavy hero shots for big blockbuster films of the summer.

It’s a little section we like to call Best Posters.

It’s that time of the month again. We cover the alphabet of posters for the month from The Ambassador to Zero Dark Thirty, and the festivals, horror films, retro designs and revivals in between. It’s the kind of month umbrellas are boats, Lincoln lives again (again) and where Sylvester Stallone isn’t the messiah, he’s just a very naughty boy.

The Ambassador – Designer: Delicious Design League

Mads Brügger goes undercover as a European ambassador to uncover the truth behind the blood diamond trade. Whether the film is exploitation of expose is currently being debated, but it is is hard to argue with the Delicious Design League’s striking poster, taking diamonds and using them to make a face. Shine on. you crazy diamond.

Cirque du Soleil: World’s Away 3D - Designer: BLT Communications, LLC

It’s a very simple design, but a beautiful one nonetheless. As with many Cirque de Soleil posters, it uses the shades of a single colour to surround a single striking image. Here, it’s a girl in an umbrella boat, floating amongst the stars. Of course it is.

The Expendables 2 – Designer: Ignition Print

Action fans have often seen Sylvester Stallone as the messiah, and his career has certainly risen from the dead more than once. His twelves disciples are lined up on either side, although we suspect that Pontius Pilate would get a grenade to the face before nailing Sly to a cross. Whether intentional or not, Dolph Lundgren is fourth from the left, the exact spot Judas occupies in the traditional painting. As His character betrayed them in the first film, we thought this was a nice touch.

The Goonies – Designer: Randy Ortiz

The Goonies are good enough, and so is this poster. In fact, it is more than good enough, it’s skulltastic. Like the best film posters, it combines all the best elements of the film and elevates it to something more than it is. Indeed, there is more going on than first meets the eye, although it must be difficult to look at anything with an eyepatch and bats flying out of your one good eye.

Lincoln

Very little has been released from this film to date, but this poster speaks volumes in its minimalism. Lincoln may have been hunting vampires earlier in the month, but here he is stripped (literally) right back to basics. The spooky resemblance Daniel Day-Lewis has with the historical figure is uncanny, and this is one we are definitely anticipating.

The Master – Designer: PLANETFAB

Unlike last month‘s glass-half-full affair, this gorgeous new design seems to speak to the complexity of the relationships in Paul Thomas Anderson’s forthcoming film, using a kaleidoscope design to signify the tripartite at the heart of the film. Critics and fans have already deified this film, so perhaps it’s PTA that should be at the centre of that poster for The Expendables 2.

ParaNorman – Designer: Tom Whalen

ParaNorman is the gift that keeps on giving. Apart from the five viral posters that the film commissioned to be seen about town, Mondo hired Tom Whalen to put another excellent one-sheet together. Can we have them all please?

Raiders of the Lost Ark – Designer: Mark Raats

It would be hard to top the late, great Richard Amsel’s original artwork on Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Mark Raats doesn’t try. He captures the same spirit of a time when film posters were drawn, not PhotoShopped, as well as some of the most memorable sequences from the film. Re-issued for the film’s Blu-ray release, along with the IMAX release, this is a great tribute. We also refuse to acknowledge this as Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. The original title was just fine.

[REC]³ Génesis - Designer: Terry Moore

This incredibly popular and influential Spanish horror series becomes a trilogy, and while it has an official poster, this one by comic book artist Terry Moore is undeniably cool. Best known for Strangers in Paradise, Moore finds true love at the heart of this gruesome scene, and is probably far more interesting than anything the entire found footage genre has spawned.

Solomon Kane

Michael J. Bassett’s Solomon Kane is finally (legally) available in the US, and to celebrate they released this surprisingly artistic poster. It looks like something Mondo would dream up for a retro revival, but instead it is used to cover up the fact that James Purefoy is in the film for some reason.

Texas Chainsaw 3D

We have no idea why ‘they’ are dipping into Tobe Hooper’s classic tale with yet another sequel/remake, but perhaps it was simply so they could provide us with this poster. Celebrating the truly grotesque, along with Leatherface’s habit of…making leather faces out of other faces, it might be the most interesting thing to come out of yet another franchise film.

Woodstock Film Festival 2012 – Designer: Bill Miller

According to Green Door, the 13th anniversary poster for the Woodstock Film Festival is “an assemblage made entirely from recycled linoleum flooring called “Eye of the World” by Hudson Valley artist Bill Miller. The poster is the artist’s depiction of the Hudson Valley. Miller has been working with repurposed vintage linoleum for over two decades and creates collage-like pieces that depict bucolic landscapes and political statements about our society”.

Zero Dark Thirty – Designer: BLT Communications, LLC

Now that Kathryn Bigelow’s Untitled Bin Laden Project has a title, it also gets a poster. The black marker of censorship looms large in this simple concept, and it runs throughout the trailer released this month as well. The design could work against the film, as you have to look pretty hard to work out what the film is called, or what “Zero Dark Thirty” means. Maybe people know these things, or maybe we were never meant to.

The changing styles of the posters are indicative of the changing trends in cinema, but the Scott name and several of his collaborators – particularly Denzel Washington – remained constant throughout. Following Enemy of the State (1998), the ‘split-screen’ one-sheet became common, appearing on five of the seven remaining posters of his career. It was not simple repetition, but a filmmaker with a singular action voice signing his name across the publicity.

It would have been a big month for posters even if San Diego Comic-Con hadn’t landed, but it was that time of the year so we got a metric bucket-load. From official posters, Mondo variants, a festival poster and a viral campaign, it has been another bumper month for people who like looking at nice things to do with movies.

The film doesn’t come out until next year, and we still know very little about it, but that hasn’t stopped our good friends at Hopko Designs from putting together a design for the next M. Night Shyamalan film After Earth. If the movie is half as good as this poster, we’re in for a nice change of pace from the uneven director.

We permanently have a placeholder for whatever it is that Tom Hodge (aka The Dude Designs) is doing, and this one for A Cadaver Christmas definitely caught our eye. As he says on his blog “ I instantly connected the title with that classic cadaver feet/toe tag image so thought it would be a great way to frame the logo in the montage, it then also enabled me to tell the story of the film from top to bottom…”. This was done for the DVD sleeve, but definitely has an 80s vibe to it. Notice the way the edges are worn, to mirror that little bit of sleeve that used to stick out over the plastic?

The good people at Mondo have teamed up with British artist Jock, best known for his work on 2000 AD, The Losers and Green Arrow: Year One. Jock contributed concept paintings to Batman Begins (2005), and now as the trilogy reaches its end, the artist has rendered this new poster for The Dark Knight Rises, filled with thousands of tiny bits of bat goodness that recalls a classic scene from that first film. This poster was available exclusively to people who visit the Mondo booth at San Diego Comic-Con.

Optical illusions are a sure way to make it into our monthly list, and while this film looks like – what’s a polite word for crap? – the poster for The Dinosaur Project does everything a great sheet should. It teases the exploratory nature of the film, and on first glance it is a dank cave with some people in it. Possibly looking for the one true ring to rule them all. The poster does, of course, form a dinosaur’s head and this might be the coolest poster for a film we have no other interest in.

The electrifying dog is back from beyond the grave! It’s Frankenweenie! Tim Burton’s latest has an appropriately retro poster, especially given he is remaking a short from the start of his career. This Comic-Con exclusive poster was coupled with a homage trailer that came out around the same time, and we particularly like the nod to the “spectacular, spellbinding third dimension”

Another Comic-Con exclusive The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is curiously devoid of Hobbits, or anybody else, other than Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellan). The artwork is almost reminiscent of the soft-focused landscapes of artist Alan Lee, who has undoubtedly influenced the series, although this poster design is from oster design by BULLDOG with assistance from mOcean. Now that the series is officially a trilogy, expect more poster goodness over the next two years.

One of our favourite films of the Sydney Film Festival this year, and definitely one of our favourites of the year to date, was Holy Motors. Now Icon Film Distribution has released the Australian one-sheet for the film. Of particular note is that pull quote there at the top of the poster. Go on. Take a closer look. That’s right. It’s from your favourite site on the Interwebs: The Reel Bits. A long quote to be sure, but we’ve never been one for brevity. Check out the original review the quote was taken from.

Mondo, the collectible art boutique arm of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, has unveiled several new posters for classic films this week. Laurent Durieux is behind both posters for King Kong and the one-sheet for The Iron Giant. These beautiful pieces of artwork evoke the wonder these films held when they were first released. They are also really cool. Known for his hatching and cross-hatching approach, the artist provides something distinctive in every print he produces.

The poster for Michele Placido’s Le Guetteur (The Lookout) caught our eye, so to speak, with the simplicity of its design. The French thriller is about a detective who hunts for the marksman who foiled the plan to catch a notorious team of bank robbers, and you kind of get that from the one-sheet. The design comes from Le Circle Noir, who do a mixture of local French one-sheets for US and other foreign films, along with a number for domestic product as well. Their website has a very comprehensive portfolio of their work.

It’s a bit of a Tolkien-fest this month as Mondo has announced that they have a licence for Lord of the Rings posters, starting with Aaron Horkey’s poster (and variant) for The Return of the King. Horkey’s style sits somewhere between artwork and typography, influence by the type of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The woody and organic style was developed over countless concert and art posters, and would have been seen by Mondo fans last year with Jurassic Park prints. This is the first of a series of posters by the artist.

It would be very easy to accuse Lady Gaga of aping Madonna and Grace Jones, because she had, and now she can add acting in B-grade films to her resume as well. In pitch-perfect casting, Robert Rodriguez announced via this cool poster that the songstress/purveyor of meat couture would be in sequel Machete Kills, and she’s brought her own wolf.

Huffington Post revealed the teaser poster for the next Paul Thomas Anderson film The Master, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams. As the source so nicely describes it, the poster is “a glass-half-full affair”. This is exactly what a teaser poster should be, teasing concepts and feelings rather than three big name actors mugging PhotoShop.

Disney has released the first poster for Sam Raimi’s Oz: The Great and Powerful, due out on 8 March 2013 in the US. The beautiful painted poster evokes an instant sense of nostalgia and the familiar, with the Yellow Brick Road, rolling green hills and even the twister conjuring up memories of the 1939 classic film. The main character is the smallest element on the poster, rightly labelled a teaser, for it is not yet known what his role in this brave new world will be. This one is by BLT Communications, LLC, who most recently did runs of posters for The Amazing Spider-man and The Avengers.

For the release of ParaNorman, Mondo have assembled some excellent artists and placed five new posters around the US at various locations. This particular one comes from Drew Millward. If you do spot one in the wild, take a picture of it and tag it #WEIRDWINS.

With the tagline “It ain’t Hollywood!”, a white clad animal person emerges from a phone booth, the glasses from his secret identity sitting idly on the footpath. The poster for Possible Worlds, the 7th Canadian Film Festival, was designed by Alexandra De Bonis and photographed by Matthew Lahoud. The site also reliably informs us that the model is the festival’s marketing and sponsorship manager Nick Jarvis.
