The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.

Directed by David Twohy, Riddick is released in US cinemas on 6 September 2013 from Universal. It hits Australian cinemas on 12 September from Roadshow.

Based on the novel World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks, it follow U.N. employee Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) who he travels the world trying to stop the outbreak of a deadly Zombie pandemic. It also looks like it will kick some serious ass.

Now we could be wrong, but was there one or two reference to convenience store chain 7-11 in there? Following the unfortunate trend of heavy product placement in family films, it seems to be a fun and kinetic adventures that we nevertheless look forward to seeing when it hits cinemas in the US on 14 February 2013.

Once being sold as The Bitter Pill, the renamed Side Effects is a psychological thriller set in the world of the pharmaceutical industry. A troubled woman (Rooney Mara) who is coping with the imminent release of her husband (Channing Tatum) from jail begins to take a new prescription drug with unforeseen consequences.

While the film looks a little more like Contagion than Magic Mike, Soderbergh’s cast of regulars have continually proven they do excellent work with the filmmaker. Definitely one to keep an eye on. When we spoke with Tatum earlier in the year, he was downplaying the role. “Yeah, I ‘m going to do a little two-week part on his next thing with Rooney Mara and Jude Law”.

Jack Reacher will be released in Australia on 3rd January 2013 from Paramount.

Escaping from a witch as kids, Hansel (Jeremy Renner) and Gretel (Gemma Arterton) have a taste for witch killing. 15 years after their incident involving a gingerbread house, the siblings have evolved into bounty hunters who hunt witches for fun and profit. We can only hope that director Tommy Wirkola built a real hinger bread house for the children of the world to enjoy.

Just in time for Halloween, the trailer for the remake of The Evil Dead arrives in full red band splattertastic glory from Sony Pictures. Directed by Fede Alvarez, with a screenplay that was scrubbed up by the devil herself Diablo Cody, fans of the original series are yet to see anything worth cutting off their hands over. The film will star Suburgatory‘s Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez and Lou Taylor Pucci. It is due out in cinemas on 12 April 2013, traditionally the scariest day of the calendar for some reason.

In the remake of the low-budget Sam Raimi 1981 cult-hit horror film, five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.

Despite the impressive cast and award-winning writer with an apparent ear for youth dialogue, none of that is on display in this lacklustre trailer. It is certainly bloody, and is going for shock value, but where are the laughs? If The Cabin in the Woods has taught us anything, and it has, it’s that there’s always room for more spam in the cabin if you are clever enough with the script. Time will tell on this one, but we miss Bruce Campbell already.

“Nothing’s been the same since New York…”

The same could be said for the Marvel Cinematic Universe since this year’s $1.5 billion box-office blockbuster The Avengers. After a massive campaign of teasing over the last few days, Marvel Studios and Disney have delivered the first teaser trailer for the highly anticipated Iron Man 3.

The trailer continues the dark theme of the previews, showing a Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) threatened with losing everything, and at a loose end after his fight alongside The Avengers. We get a look at Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin, as well as a brief look at Killen (Guy Pierce). There’s also a fair bit of Tony and Pepper (Gwyneth Paltrow) running from their waterfront property being blown up, and a teasing final shot of Stark sans armour walking through the snow. It looks like it will deliver on the promise of the synopsis of a Stark “left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him.“
